MSL’s Misfuel insurance policy will cover the cost of draining a customer’s fuel tank if the wrong fuel has been used– either in situ or if necessary, the vehicle will be towed to a nearby garage.
The cover will ensure the fuel tank will be expertly drained, as well as providing some fuel to get customers on their way again.
Estimates from the RAC are that around 150,000 motorists in the UK each year accidentally put the wrong type of fuel in their cars. It can be easily done if you are in a rush or in unfamiliar surroundings and is a far more common occurrence than you might think.
Putting diesel into a petrol vehicle can cause damage and inconvenience but putting petrol into a diesel vehicle and driving off can be catastrophic for the vehicle. Repairs can run into thousands of pounds and may involve replacing the whole fuel system.
Aside from the inconvenience of putting the wrong type of fuel in a car, it can be expensive to get the fuel tank drained before continuing a journey.
Some comprehensive motor insurance policies cover misfuelling but not all do. Some will require an extra monthly premium to give misfuel insurance cover and customers should check their policy documents to see if a motor policy covers misfuelling.
