Would you buy your next car on Amazon?

According to Bloomberg, Amazon will concentrate on the UK to begin with as it moves into the European car market, with cars priced online through their site and then delivered to a local dealership. For those wondering, I doubt the local postman would be able to hand deliver a new car, no matter how small it is or whether there is self-assembly required, e.g. the air bumps on the Citroen C3!
Italian Stallion
While Amazon is using the UK as an entry point to the European market, they did complete a recent trial of the service in Italy, whereby Amazon partnered with Fiat Chrysler to offer car buyers the ability to purchase Fiat 500, Panda and 500L models. Customers were able to spec and purchase the car, either in full or via a finance deal via Amazon.
Following their recent recruitment of Christoph Moeller, a motor industry expert at consultancy Oliver Wyman, to spearhead their new project it’s obvious that Amazon are fully focused on this new endeavour.
It is not yet known which cars Amazon is set to offer, although considering their, now successful, relationship with Fiat Chrysler it wouldn’t be surprising for them to launch with similar deals to the ones offered in Italy. According to German car magazine Automobilwoche, Moeller is now in charge of working with European carmakers, therefore it is expected that Amazon is interested in offering a wide range of vehicles in the future.
Online shopping
With brands like BMW already successfully launching online retail outlets for customers to order a car in minutes, it’s likely that Amazon is just the beginning of a wider push for online sales, but would you feel comfortable buying a car you haven’t seen in person?
Isn’t a big part of car buying the test drive?
Where do you stand on this issue? If you spec a vehicle to your requirements online and then find you dislike it when you drive it, is the time saved at the beginning of the process worth the hassle of returning it?
